Evidence-Based Training – Why Operators Should Start Now

EBT is shifting from optional to essential. European Union Aviation Safety Agency plans mandatory adoption this decade, and late adopters risk gaps in data, instructors and syllabus design.
Evidence-Based Training – Why Operators Should Start Now

Evidence-Based Training (EBT) is moving from an option to a requirement. EASA’s transition path has business aviation operators converging on a mandated EBT framework within this decade, and the operators that wait until it is compulsory will arrive at the transition without the data, the instructor calibration, or the syllabus design needed to do it properly.

EBT shifts the centre of gravity of recurrent training. Instead of running every crew through the same fixed manoeuvre list every year, an EBT programme uses the operator’s own flight-operations data — FDM, line-check observations, safety reports — to identify the competencies that actually need work. Sessions are built around behavioural markers and root causes, not around a checklist of events. Pilots benefit from training that is genuinely relevant to their fleet and their routes; operators benefit from a measurable picture of crew performance over time.

The transition is not flick-of-a-switch. It requires the operator’s training and safety functions to talk to each other in a way many programmes do not yet support, and it requires the ATO to be equipped to deliver against behavioural assessment frameworks, not just a manoeuvre-grading sheet.

AeronautX is built around this transition. Our Amsterdam Level D simulators capture the granular data needed to support competency-based assessment, and our recurrent offering is designed to be delivered in a mixed EBT and traditional model so that operators can move at their own speed — running a fully EBT-compliant programme where they are ready for it, and the conventional model where they are not. We work directly with operators on the underlying syllabus design and on instructor calibration so the transition is supported, not just declared.

The right time to start building EBT capability is not the year before it becomes mandatory. It is now.
